Nanaimo Acute Response Table
The City of Nanaimo worked with community partners to create the Nanaimo Acute Response Table (NART), previously known as the Situation Table. The table is a multi-agency team focused on addressing specific situations where the probability of a vulnerable person or family experiencing harm is imminent, significant and cuts across multiple human service sectors.
- Timely mobilization of resources;
- Increased awareness/knowledge of risks, trends and systemic issues;
- Achieve a reduction in the levels of harm and victimization;
- Improved collaboration and communication among service providers;
- Increased awareness of risks and needs among individuals and families;
- More proactive measures implemented; and
- Increased community safety and well-being.
Members of the Table meet regularly to review situations of acutely elevated risk to determine if an individual or family meets the criteria for imminent risk for harm and/or victimization. Through consensus, the Table members coordinate interventions as necessary; the Table does not perform case management. The purpose of the Table is to address acutely elevated risk within 24-48 hours and connect individuals and families to services. Case management remains with the most appropriate agency as determined by the members of the table. The following organizations participate in the Nanaimo Acute Response Table:
- Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA)
- City of Nanaimo - Community Safety Officers / Bylaws
- City of Nanaimo - Social Planning, Community Policing (Table Support)

- Background
On August 31, 2020, Council received a presentation by the Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, Sheila Malcomson, titled “BC’s Situation Table and Next Steps to Tackle Social Disorder”. In response, Council made a motion to organize a meeting between City Staff and the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General (MPSSG) to discuss Situation Tables and to invite Nanaimo based agencies and nonprofits to be a part of that meeting. Council also asked that a letter of general support be provided for the concept of establishing a Situation Table in Nanaimo and any associated grant opportunities.
